Starfield Main Story Campaign Length Explained

The galaxy's a big place.

Starfield, like most RPGs out there, is a lengthy game that is going to sport more content than you’re likely to ever see in your playthrough. With many, many planets to touch down on and explore, you’d need a good lifetime to see everything available. For most of you though, the main story is where it’s at. Here’s what you can expect in terms of length for the main story campaign of Starfield.

How Long Does Starfield Take to Beat?

While we don’t have any concrete details as of writing, seeing as no one in the public has actually played through it, we have the benefit of more public details. During the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase back in June, Todd Howard divulged a lot of details regarding what we can expect from Starfield at launch. According to Howard, the main story could take anywhere from 30-40 hours to complete depending on how fast you move through it.

Now while that seems fairly concrete, this number doesn’t take into account the side content you explore. Side quests could easily add a few dozen more on. There’s also the thousand or so planets, with the exploration of some of those likely tacking on some extra hours. This is just for people who want to focus on the main story and that’s it.

By comparison, other Bethesda titles like Fallout 4 often fell below 30 hours in total completion time, the reason for this jump is simple. Starfield has around “20% more [quests] than previous ones”, so there’ll be plenty of story content to sink our teeth into. Needless to say, I’m excited.

Before you gear up for an adventure that could take you a few weeks to complete, you might want to look into more details about the game. To that end, check out our guide on what we could expect from the level cap in Starfield.
