Spoofing is still very popular to this day, but there are some issues since it’s essentially tempering with your phone and your game. For that reason, if it wasn’t obvious enough by now, spoofing goes against the game’s Terms of Service. Quoting their exact position on the matter:
For the purposes of this policy, we define cheating as behaviors that violate the Pokémon GO Terms of Service and Trainer Guidelines, such as falsifying location (GPS location spoofing) and accessing Pokémon GO clients or backends in an unauthorized manner, including through the use of third-party software or add-ons.
Spoofing your location can get you easily banned, so do it at your own leisure.
