Will Starfield Have DLSS? – Answered

Go even faster through space (sort of)

Starfield is finally going to be upon us soon. On September 6 (or September 1 if you get Early Access), the game will launch on both PC and Xbox Series X|S, allowing fans to dive into the team’s first new IP in decades. With a lot of hype surrounding it, you may be wondering if the game will support Nvidia’s upscaling tech. Here’s whether Starfield will have DLSS.

Can You Enable DLSS in Starfield?

The short answer here is that it probably won’t, though the team hasn’t said anything definitive on the subject yet. To go into a bit more detail, there are a few reasons I believe it won’t include DLSS. First and foremost, AMD is a major sponsor in Starfield, meaning the game will likely be optimized for its hardware. Having a competitor’s technology in the game wouldn’t be the greatest choice for that partnership to continue.

The other bit of news is a bit more recent. According to some recent data mines (done by Twitter user Sebasti66855537), there was no mention of Nvidia’s DLSS or Intel’s XeSS technologies mentioned within the preload files for the game. This has naturally led many to believe that the game won’t support it. Without an answer from the team itself though, we can’t 100% confirm it.

For the unaware, DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) is a relatively new technology from Nvidia, using AI to upscale images. In essence, you could upscale a game that’s running at 720p or even 480p to 1080p, keeping the quality of the game while requiring far less processing power and allowing for higher framerates. It’s a revolutionary bit of technology that acts as free performance in any game you use it in. You can even tweak it to your liking, changing the resolution you upscale from to improve quality.
