Blizzard revealed their World of Warcraft: Shadowlands Afterlives (phew, mouthful) animated series earlier this week, and now we’ve got our first look at episode one. While shorter than we anticipated and significantly less animation than seemingly promised, the first episode does give us some more of that lore-y goodness before the Shadowlands expansion releases in October.
The first episode of Afterlives is called Bastion with Maxlraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth coming soon over the next several weeks. For now, we’ve got almost 7 minutes of sort-of animated goodness to feast our eyes on before Shadowlands itself drops:
When Afterlives was first revealed, the wording of the teaser had many believe that this would be a full series; 30-minute episodes. While disappointing to some, the small animated shorts are more in-line with what Blizzard did with Overwatch, using a new medium to tell different stories for a beloved universe.
Bastion follows the story of Uther Lightbringer, a figure in World of Warcraft that was eventually killed by Arthas. As he ascends to Bastion, fans are able to get a small glimpse into the role this character may be playing when Shadowlands releases, especially with the premise of the new expansion relying heavily on a realm beyond Azeroth.

The upcoming Shadowlands expansion is going to take the game in a much darker place than ever before and the betrayal seen from the Horde side will come to a head with Sylvanas and her journey for power. With new locations, vampire parties, and a haunting new story, Afterlives looks to set the stage for players itching for a new adventure.
