Loyalty is a key component to any RPG companion system, but Tyranny takes things a step further, introducing a Fear system alongside their Loyalty system. But what do these systems entail, and why are they important? In this article we will go over every single thing you need to know about the Fear and Loyalty systems in Tyranny.

Understanding the System

Before you can really dive into the system, you need to understand it. The first thought that might come to mind when looking at this system is that Fear and Loyalty are opposite of each other. This is not correct. In fact, many of your companions will both be Loyal and Fearful of you. Take a look at Kills-in-Shadows. This Beastwoman companion needs to be both afraid and loyal to you if you want her to stick around. This means learning how to juggle these two systems to make the most of them.

Both the Fear and Loyalty systems also offer up different abilities and spells that you can gain access to. This makes min maxing these systems important, if you wish to take advantage of the skills available to each one.

Understanding What The System Does

Now that you understand more about this system, you need to understand what it does. For the most part, this system doesn’t play that big of a part in the main storyline of the game, except when it comes to factions. They work on a similarly different system than the companion’s Fear and Loyalty system, though, so we’ll get to that in a later article.

Loyalty is important because it creates stronger connections with your companions. This allows you to keep them by your side, even when big story-changing moments happen, like at the end of Act 1, during the quest Assault the Citadel, your loyalty with Verse or Barik will determine if they stick around after the Archons declare war on each other.

Aside from this, Loyalty and Fear are not vitally important parts of the game. They do not change the outcome of the story, or the ending, and only work minutely to transform the way that certain NPCs and characters feel about you and your party. However, it should also be noted, that while these systems do not act as exact opposites at all times, you can sometimes lose loyalty and gain fear, or vice versa.

The Loyalty and Fears systems add a little more complexity to Tyranny’s gameplay, without being overly distracting from the main storyline.
