In Tyranny, players take on the role of a Fatebinder, a lawkeeper that upholds and dictates the law according to the Overlord, Kyros. In this article, we’ll take you through the first part of the game, and show you how to get the first part of your story started.
The Edgering Ruins
You arrive in the Edgering Ruins, and the ground shakes, causing rocks and debris to fill the pass from which you entered. You carry an edict from Kyros, the Great Overlord himself. Upon your arrival you will spot Aurora, a Disfavored soldier, off to the left. Move and speak with her to find out what is going on. Depending on your Lore or Subterfuge ratings, your dialogue options may vary. Learn more about the character attributes in Tyranny with our guide.
Once you finish speaking with her, follow her down towards the sound of fighting. It appears the Tiersmen have sent more runners to try to break through the Overlord’s blockade of the Tiers. You can’t let them through, though, so head forward and take them on.
First Taste of Blood
Combat in Tyranny can be a bit tricky if you aren’t used to it. Be sure to use your Space key to pause often and strategize about your attacks. Using the full force of your party is important, so make sure you aren’t ignoring any of your party members.
With the first batch of Vendrien Guard down, continue forward to find a rock blocking the path. You have two options here. You can either squeeze through, or if you have an Athletics Skill of 30 or higher, you can push the boulder out of the way, taking a Vendrien Soldier down with you. Once through, take out the other Oathbreakers nearby, and then continue down the path. Skill checks of this sort are very common throughout the game, so get used to seeing them.
Growing Your Party
Further down the path you will meet your first party member, Verse, taking on several members of the Vendrien army. A conversation cue will pop up, and you’ll be pulled into a bit of dialogue. At the end, choose to join the battle and Verse will join your party.
A member of the Scarlet Chorus, Verse, is a rogue style character whose main focus at the moment is archery and dual-wielding. Of course, Tyranny isn’t a class-based game, so you can change her skills up any way that you see fit.
With Verse now in your party you are twice as strong. Take out the Sun Soldiers around you and Verse will chat with you a bit more. She’ll formally introduce herself, then you can head down the natural steps where another group of Vendrien Guard await their slaughter. After a bit of chatting, a group of Disfavored Soldiers will come rolling through the gate, and will help clear out the Sun Soldiers in your way.
Saving Drastus
With that batch of enemies down, a soldier will run up, warning you of a situation at the Cliffside. Follow the soldier through the camp to find a Sun Soldier named Pelox Tyrel holding a Disfavored Officer at knifepoint. There are three main ways this can play out. You can either:
- Attempt to save him by attacking. He will die, gaining a small amount of favor with the Disfavored, but hurting your reputation with the Chorus.
- You can attack and choose to let him die, which will gain you favor with the Chorus, but lose reputation with the Disfavored.
- Or, if you have an Athletics skill of 30 or more, you can actually save him, gaining you favor with both groups.
- Other options will also appear depending on your Conquest choices during your character’s creation.
Our character happened to have 30 Athletics, so we were able to save him. Once the situation is over, though, head back into the camp and talk to the two officers, Drastus (a Disfavored Officer who was held at knife point) and Mocking Blaze, an Officer with the Scarlet Chorus. Choose what you would like to happen to the prisoner, and then head towards the gate to the south to access the world map.
If you happen to have a character with 30 Athletics of 39 Subterfuge, you can head left just beyond the gate and climb up the wall to unlock a chest with some goodies inside. When you’re ready to continue, move out the gate and select the World Map icon to bring up the World Map, allowing you to move on to the Disfavored Camp.
