Tips For Playing Unravel – Finding String, Avoiding Danger

Don't get unwound.

If you’re a fan of platformers, definitely check out Electronic Arts’ Unravel. In it you play Yarny, a figure made of string that makes his way across a series of challenging stages in the hopes of gaining memories to cheer up a lonely old woman.

This adventure can string you along if you aren’t careful. With these tips, you should be able to unwind.

The String’s the Thing

Yarny unravels each time he moves forward. This includes going down steps, the side of a tree or working his way to higher platforms.

You’ll want to keep an eye open for spools of red string. These let Yarny fill back up so that he doesn’t run out. These are usually in plain sight. However, watch out for hidden spools – there are occasional flowers and other items in the environment that you can pull aside with your lasso.

If you run short on string, use the left shoulder button to backtrack and gather yourself back up as you try to find a spool. If all else fails, you can hold down on the D-pad to start over from the last checkpoint, and see what you missed a little further back.

Take a Ride

As you proceed through the world, you’ll eventually come across segments where you ride on vehicles. In the beginning stage, for instance, you’ll have to use a tricycle to reach a latch on a nearby fence, then ride it down a hill until you get to the other side.

To use the tricycle, pull it along using your lasso (right shoulder button) and then perch yourself on top of the gate to get through. The ride will begin automatically from there and then crash on the other side. You’ll land safely on some rocks and continue your journey.

There’s also a segment involving a kite. This can be a bit tricky, but it’s easy to control when riding it. Simply use Yarny to guide it with the left analog stick, which will guide it up and down depending on which direction held. You’ll want to avoid tree branches that could abruptly end your ride, and also keep afloat to prevent crashing before you reach the next platform. It might take a couple of tries to get the hang of, but eventually you’ll be flying high.

Swing and Jump

There’s a tricky amount of platforming you’ll have to master in Unravel, but after a few tries, you’ll get the hang of it.

The first thing you’ll want to master is rope swinging. Latch onto a nearby hook using your lasso, then use the analog stick to set up enough propulsion from your swing to maintain momentum. Once you reach the height of your swing, release the lasso button and you’ll go flying. You might need to grab a nearby hook, so make sure you press the button at the right time to avoid a fall.

You won’t simply avoid dangers from above. You’ll also have to deal with threats on the ground – namely crabs. These creatures will easily mangle Yarny with their claws. However, you should be able to jump on their backs quickly enough to get over them – but don’t stay on their backs or you’ll get shredded.

Also, crabs seem to like oysters, and you’ll find some on occasion that can distract them. Use Yarny’s pull ability (either the B or circle button, depending on the platform) and drag it over until it’s in range. Stay out of the grasp of its claw and hop on the other side to push it over, and it’ll get distracted. This will allow you to pull a switch and move on, or get away long enough to reach the next part of the level.

Aside from mastering your swing, avoiding danger and making sure you have enough yarn, you should do fine in the world of Unravel.
