To celebrate, we’re going back to the Sega Genesis with these retro tips for the original Sonic the Hedgehog game that started it all!

Level Select Cheat in Sonic the Hedgehog

Of course, nothing’s better than being able to start on the level you want in Sonic the Hedgehog, whether it’s the Marble Zone or the Star Light Zone. You can select which level you want by going to the title screen and entering Up, Down, Left and Right. You’ll hear a ring noise if you inputted the cheat code correctly.

From there, hold down the A button and press start, and you’ll reach a level select screen to begin wherever you wish.

Config Mode in Sonic the Hedgehog

Yes, you can mess around with objects in Sonic the Hedgehog, though it could have an effect on score, time and other icons, so be sure you know what you’re getting into.

To activate Config mode, simply press Up, C, Down, C, Left, C, Right C and the title screen. From there, hold the A button and hit Start. To activate Config mode at any time, just hit the B button.

This will turn Sonic into a ring and allow him to move anywhere throughout the level, and you can change him back by hitting the B button. You can also press C and replace him with another item if you prefer. It’s a bit weird, but it allows you to skip past problematic areas giving you trouble.
