Tips for Playing Battleborn

Get some friends together and wreak havoc as you fight to save the last star.

Battleborn is finally here, and it’s definitely something fans of Gearbox Software will enjoy. Like the Borderlands games before it, Battleborn relies heavily on team support in order to survive each battle with enemy forces. However, it has a lot more to offer than that, including a variety of upgrades for each of the game’s 25 characters through both Leveling and the Helix system.

Here are some general tips to keep in mind before venturing off into the reaches of space.

The Difference Between Leveling and Helix.

When it comes to making your character more powerful over the course of the game, there are two basic systems you need to understand.

The first is the Leveling system. This is your general Leveling meter that grows after each Level you reach, and with the experience earned over the course of the game. You can Level your character to a maximum of 15 within Battleborn that will earn you additional augmentations, as well as character skins that you can equip at any time. New titles and badges will become available to your profile as you proceed through each mission, and reaching a certain Command Rank grants access to Loot Packs. These Loot Packs will reward you with bonus weapons and other valuable items.

Then there’s the Helix System. This skill tree allows you choose upgrades you can immediately apply to your character. Whenever an upgrade becomes available, the game notifies you to temporarily slow down the game to choose between two options.

The toughest part to this system is choosing which upgrade is more suitable. It all depends on your style of play. For instance, if you’re a melee combat-based character you’ll want to go something that fits with your striking style. However, if you are more of a run and gun type – like the big chain gunner Montana – you’ll want something to make your shots more powerful.

There are no wrong choices in the Helix system. The choices you make apply immediately, and you can instantly see their effects in battle. What’s more, you have access to up to ten different upgrades in a multiplayer game, so there plenty of choices available to you. Mix and match, and see what each one can do for you.

Don’t worry about upgrades to your health or damage either – these will be Leveled automatically as your character progresses. However, make sure to keep an eye out for health pick-ups when possible – after all, your character isn’t invincible.

Know Your Characters

Throughout Battleborn you’ll unlock new warriors, each with their own unique style of play. There are some that specialize in melee-style attacks with swords and other weaponry, while others lean towards assault rifle-style combat. There are also snipers, along with some heavy hitters thrown into the mix.

The best way to find a character that’s suitable to your style is to check their description. Here you’ll see their general attacks, as well as their special techniques. If you prefer close-quarters combat, someone like Rath (with his swords) may do the trick. Montana is a great on-the-go gunner despite his tremendous size, and Thorn is a viable charge-shot warrior with a few tricks up her sleeve.

Again, it depends on your unique style of play. We’ll have a guide with character recommendations on Prima soon. For now, don’t be afraid to experiment and see what each character has to offer. You might develop a surprise favorite out of the mix! Like Marquis, a character who looks noble and harmless but packs a mean punch with his pistol.

Assemble Your Squad

You could try and take on Battleborn solo, and it’s certainly not impossible. However, chances are if you go this route you’ll find yourself overwhelmed pretty quickly. As a result, you’re likely to run out of lives sooner rather than later. This is why it’s important to make sure you have a good squad watching your back.

Battleborn includes options for both public and private matches. Public is a great way to get introduced to the game if you have yet to establish a team. While you always run into random players who don’t perform as well as you’d hope, it’s still an excellent way to get comfortable operating within a team dynamic.

Once you’re ready – or find enough friends that own a copy of the game – go for the private match option. Having a team along for the ride will help you breathe a little easier – and also conserve a few of those extra lives when you desperately need them later on in the level. Just make sure you’re all on the same page, and don’t get greedy with the loot. There’s plenty to go around.

Lastly, make sure you utilize both checkpoints, as well as the ability to pick up secondary tools like assault drones that follow you around. Checkpoints will prevent you from having to run from one side of the map to the other to jump back into the fight, and they’re generously spread throughout a stage. While picking up a drone may cost you a few credits, it’s worth it considering its additional firepower will come in handy against larger groups.

To quickly recap make sure you know your systems, characters, levels, and your secondary tools.

That way you’re sure to survive the world of Battleborn just fine!
