Tears of the Kingdom: How to Get Past Calip (TotK)

Hey! You there!

Anyone who has made it to Kakariko Village in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has surely seen the Ring Ruins, and there is nothing more alluring that some ancient ruins that are begging to be explored. The only problem is the guard named Calip that will stop you at every direction when you attempt to enter the area. It’s unlike most other sections in the game, but I know his motive. Here’s how to get past Calip in Tears of the Kingdom.

How to Get Past Calip in Kakariko Village TOTK

To make your way past Calip, you have to reach the story mission called “Fifth Sage” which tasks you with exploring the Ring Ruins in Kakariko Village. That means you need to complete all of the “Regional Phenomena” tasks before coming back to the ancient ruins.

There are four major tasks in the Regional Phenomena quest that eventually leads to a fight at Hyrule Castle. After his part of the story is behind you in Tears of the Kingdom, you have to “find the ruins from the Age of Legends.” The ruins in question are the Kakariko Village Ring Ruins guarded by Calip.

Until you have this specific quest, Calip will continue to stop you. I even tried getting to the top of a mountain and gliding down to the ruins where he couldn’t see me. There was no luck there either. This is one of the few parts of Tears of the Kingdom that are genuinely tied to story progression and can’t be solved with some creativity.

For the time being, you can at least complete the “A Trip Through History” quest that tasks Link with scanning the four tablets around the Ring Ruins. These aren’t the same ones that Calip is guarding, but they are close by, and they eventually lead to the fifth slab that is part of the main story. Soon enough, Calip will stop being annoying and I can continue my own adventure in peace.
