July 2020 is almost over, and the next Pokemon GO community Day event is right around the corner. On August 8, Pokemon GO players will be able to participate in an in-game event centered around one of the most recognizable Pokemon in the series’ long history. But, perhaps, this one isn’t recognizable for all the right reasons. If you’ve ever had a hankering to dive into the depths of Magikarp lore, well your time is coming up soon.
Pokemon GO Magikarp Event Guide
From 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM in your local time, the Pokemon GO Community Day event will go live, and it’s all about Magikarp. As we know, Magikarp is one of the most enduring Pokemon creatures, thanks to its ability to live long, survive in any body of water, and… you know, flop around really high and stuff. Also it evolves into Gyarados if you invest enough time into it, which means Magikarp is secretly one of the most powerful Pokemon you can get. Eventually.

For Community Day events in Pokemon GO, there are usually a few static events, such as increased spawn rates and special packages you can purchase for real money. That’s the case here, as Magikarp will be showing up more frequently, giving players ample opportunities to collect that precious candy. You’ll also be able to buy the one-time August Community Day Box, which comes with 30 Ultra Balls, an Elite Charged TM, six Star Pieces and one Incense. For an extra buck, you can get access to the Making a Splash! Special Research story. Niantic will announce when those tickets go live for purchase at a later date.
The goal during the Pokemon GO Magikarp event is to not only celebrate this funky fish, but it’s also to get a Gyarados. To that end, there will be event-only Field Research tasks that pay off with extra Magikarp Candy. And as an added bonus, if you evolve a Magikarp during the event (with an additional two-hour grace period), the Gyarados will have the powerful Aqua Tail move.
Finally, during the event you’ll get three times the normal amount of Catch Stardust, and Incense will last for three hours. And if you take some snapshots, Niantic says you’ll get a “surprise.”
