This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire holds nothing back when the game first starts off. It’s a huge exposition dump that gets things set up for the story ahead, and during this time you’ll find yourself face to face with one of the gods that you had a chance to pledge yourself to in Pillars of Eternity. During this opening sequence you’re given a very important choice—choose to serve Berath and take on the quest or return to The Wheel. While choosing to serve Berath is the obvious choice here, what happens if you choose to ‘return to The Wheel’ in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire? We were curious, so we decided to give it a try.

What Happens If You Return to The Wheel?

Choosing to return to The Wheel isn’t really a choice that you want to make, though it is nice that Obsidian Entertainment through this little choice in there. If you choose not to serve Berath, and be returned to The Wheel, then you are quickly sucked away and reincarnated as a furry creature, basically bringing the game to an end before it really begins.

It’s a nice little gesture to give you such a choice so early on in the game, and it’s something we’d expect from a developer who makes sure that player’s choices feel like they matter and have weight. Of course, this doesn’t really accomplish anything for the story, so if you want to continue the game and get into the nitty gritty of it all, you’re going to need to be prepared to serve Berath and go after your enemy.

Being able to choose to return to The Wheel is a fun little choice, but ultimately it only allows you to bypass the story and jump right into the credits. Still, though, it’s cool to see the choice in the game, as it does give players a little bit of an option.

Now that you know what happens if you choose to return to The Wheel, head back over to our Pillars of Eternity guide and walkthrough for more information about the game and all of its intricate systems.
