No, this is not Skyward Sword! No waving the Wii-mote or Joy-Cons around. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is just like Breath of the Wild, a much less gimmicky Zelda game, at least when it comes to motion controls. However, there is one option that you will notice only if you are playing in portable mode, which is enabled by default, and it refers to aiming with the help of the gyroscope.
Some players prefer this assist when aiming, so that’s probably why it’s on by default here (it was the same with Splatoon 3), however, if this control method bothers you and you want to aim the old-school way without any gyro controls, check out the guide below to find out how to turn it off in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
How to Turn Off Motion Controls in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
To turn off motion controls, i.e. gyro aiming in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom:
- While in-game, press the + button.
- Navigate to the System settings tab with L or R buttons.
- Select Options.
- Find “Aim with motion controls”.
- Press the A button to disable it.

After that, you can go back to the game and the motion controls will be turned off. The only place in the game where you use them is while aiming with the bow and arrow, looking through scope, moving stuff with Ultrahand, or using the Camera (Photo Mode).
Since this assist is not used anywhere else, it might not be bad to leave it on and get used to the extra precision it brings, but if you still don’t want it – now you know how to disable it for good.
