How to Solve Chelona’s Rise in Elden Ring

Much earlier in Elden Ring, you may come across a puzzle asking you to “seek three wise beasts.” The first time at Oriys’ Rise is pretty easy, as it doesn’t ask you to venture far for the little ghost turtles. Much later in the game you’ll find another set of towers up in the Moonlight Altar area. Chelona’s Rise asks you to find three more wise beasts, but this time they’re much further spread apart. Also instead of little ghost turtles they’re extremely large ghost turtles. Yet somehow they aren’t easy to see. Here’s how to solve Chelona’s Rise.

First you have to actually get there, which is tougher than it sounds. Chelona’s Rise is in the bottom-left corner of that part of the map, as far south as you can go. The opposite corner to the north houses an Evergaol, and the way the map works it’s easiest to head there first, then double back and down the path along the cliffs. It isn’t exactly a smooth ride. There’s probably a dragon in the way, maybe two if you aren’t careful. You’ll also have to contend with two pairs of Crystalians, which aren’t boss level but still require a critical hit to break their armor. Finally, there’s a Lesser Wolf of Radagon. The wolf and dragons won’t respawn, so even if you get dunked a couple times the Crystalians are the only constant threats.

Once you get there you have to interact with the Imp statue, just to initiate the puzzle. After a patch, you don’t have to worry about resetting it if you fast travel or die. Now it’s time for some paranormal big ghosty dog-hunting. The first one is just to the west of the Rise, hanging on the cliffsides. It’s a very sneaky ghost, so reward its efforts with a bonk to the head.

The second large incorporeal reptile is hanging out all the way over by the Lunar Estate Ruins to the east. You’ll have to hop down a few rocky ledges, but you’ll find your wise beast (?) just kinda chillin’ with his pals. Once again, bonkin’ time.

The next one I won’t be able to provide a fun screenshot for, due to reasons I’ll get to in a bit here. For number three, you need to head back up towards the Evergaol. Your destination is underneath it a bit, and a little to the left.

You may or may not see a flying ghostly creature of the possible dog variety way up in the air. What you definitely will see is one of those Spiritspring gimmicks. If the enormous friend is in the air, you gotta give it the bonk flying through the air. If it isn’t there, you just get to land and move on with the puzzle.

So, here’s the rub. It’s possible one or more of these wise beasts simply won’t appear. For me, it was the third one. Instead of having to smack a flying turtle, I got the notification the Rise’s seal lifted. This appears to be inconsistent, with some players never seeing the first or second turtle, and some players only seeing one of them! It seems like they spawn oddly and their precarious hiding spots can backfire. Whoops!

Once you’re in the Rise, it’s a matter of climbing the stairs and riding the lift to the top. There you’ll find a treasure chest that contains a totally useless piece of paper. Well, at least for me. She really doesn’t know what to do with that thing, or at least nothing a big hunk of sharp metal couldn’t do better.

For all the nerds who like to play with fireballs and stuff, your reward is the Ranni’s Dark Moon spell, which is similar to Relanna’s. They have different properties, and this one can be boosted with the right equipment.
