A sneak attack.

After reaching the Grasslands in Chapter 2 of FF7 Rebirth, one of your first tasks is to get a Chocobo from Bill’s Ranch; the only problem is, you can’t afford it – but there’s a solution. Here’s how to find and catch Piko the Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Piko the Chocobo Location in FF7 Rebirth

To find Piko in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth during the Chocobo Wrangling quest, go outside the barn at Bill’s Ranch and west through the main gate, then look at the floor, where you’ll spot some Chocobo tracks.

Run left until you reach the Chocobo Ranch sign, then just before passing it, take a right down a small dirt path. Keep running south past a cluster of trees, and you’ll eventually reach an open field, where you’ll spot three Chocobo, one of which is Piko.

You can see Piko’s exact location in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in my map screenshot below:

You may have found Piko, but catching the naughty little Chocobo is just half the battle: you have to catch them.

How to Catch Piko the Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

To catch Piko the Chocobo, you need to sneak up on them without alerting both Piko and the two other Chocobo in the field. The best way to do this is to wait until the two other Chocobo are facing away from Cloud and then roll as fast as possible to the grass patch nearest Piko. While going slow may be your initial instinct, I’ve found that moving quickly is a lot easier as the two Chocobo often turn around, and you could be caught if they look your way while you’re crossing between grass patches.

You’ll see three rocks on the ground once you’re in the grass patch just behind Piko. Slowly move over to one and pick one up by pressing Triangle. Then, you want to toss it near Piko to distract them. To do this, hold L1 to aim, then move your cursor to the left of Piko, and press Square to throw it. Make sure you don’t hit Piko!

If successful, Piko will focus on the thrown rock, giving you a small window to approach and wrangle them. Move behind Piko slowly until you see a Triangle button prompt appear; press it, and the runaway Chocobo will be caught successfully.

Do You Get a Reward for Catching Piko?

The reward for catching Piko in FF7 Rebirth is… Piko. That’s right – you get Piko as your very own Chocobo to ride on whenever you’d like. To summon your Chocobo while you’re in the open world, press R1, and Cloud will use the Chocobo Whistle.

Now that you have Piko in your clutches, find out how to get Numinous Ashes in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The resource is used in early-game Item Transmuter recipes, but, like the Chocobo, it can be difficult to track down if you don’t know where to look.
