How to Easily Defeat Bulborbs in Pikmin 2

Red, not dead.

The time is right to play through some of the older Pikmin games since Pikmin 4 is right around the corner. If it’s your first time with them, you may be surprised at how difficult they are, especially relative to the new Pikmin 4 demo or Pikmin 3. Lucky for you, I have an essential tip for dealing with one of the game’s most ubiquitous enemies: the humble Bulborb.

How to Safely Tackle Bulborbs

The key to engaging a Bulborb is to attack using a hoard of Red Pikmin from directly behind while they’re asleep. With no less than 40 Pikmin, position yourself behind the napping beast. Then, use the L button and right stick to send your Pikmin swarming at its backside. If all goes well, the Bulborb will die shortly after it finishes standing up, leaving it unable to harm the captains or any Pikmin.

If for some reason you don’t finish the Bulborb off before it begins to attack, call your Pikmin back with the whistle to reset. After a few short moments and a little space, the Bulborb should wander back home and fall asleep facing away from you – the perfect chance for a second attack.

General Combat Tips in Pikmin 2

In general, Red Pikmin and Purple Pikmin should be your go-to’s for combat. Purples are incredible for getting the jump on unaware enemies, causing massive damage when thrown on top of them. Reds are great for sustained damage, doing best when allowed to smack enemies from either the ground or while attached.

Positioning is perhaps the most important combat philosophy in any Pikmin game. Enemies with direction attacks, bites, or jumps can generally be avoided by using the right stick to adjust your Pikmin and keep them out of harm’s way.
