Pokemon GO is going through its villain arc right now, both in game and out. But there’s at least one embodiment of greed and evil that you can defeat. Here’s how to beat Giovanni in Pokemon GO for April 2023.

How to Beat Giovanni in Pokemon GO (April 2023)

If you’ve made it all the way to Giovanni, congrats. You’re a trainer the Rockets should have known better than to mess with. But Giovanni is a different threat altogether, and his team for April is quite tough. Fortunately, with the right Pokemon, we can bring him to heel.

Giovanni has a certain set of Pokemon. You can expect to fight from this pool:

  • Persian, Giovanni’s constant companion
  • Nidoking, Kingler, or Kingdra
  • Shadow Regice

Knowing this, here’s the best breakdown for who to bring against Giovanni.

To Defeat Persian

Persian is a Normal-Type Pokemon with weaknesses to Fighting.

Thus, fantastic options are:

  • Terrakion with Double Kick, Sacred Sword, Rock Slide
  • Tyranitar with Smack Down, Crunch, Stone Edge
  • Lucario with Counter, Power-Up Punch, Shadow Ball
  • Machamp with Counter, Close Combat, Stone Edge

Any Fighting-Type Pokemon with enough bulk and strength will be able to burst Persian down eventually.

To Defeat Nidoking

Nidoking is a Poison- and Ground-type Pokemon weak to Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water Pokemon.

Thus, fantastic options are:

  • Rhyperior with Mud Slap, Rock Wrecker, Surf
  • Kyogre with Waterfall, Surf, Blizzard
  • Swampert with Mud Shot, Hydro Cannon, Earthquake
  • Mamoswine with Powder Snow, Avalanche, Ancient Power

To Defeat Kingdra

Kingdra is a Dragon- and Water-Type Pokemon. It’s weak to Dragon and Fairy Pokemon.

Thus, fantastic options are:

  • Dragonite with Dragon Tail, Dragon Claw, Superpower
  • Togekiss with Charm, Ancient Power, Flamethrower
  • Primarina with Charm, Moonblast, Hydro Pump
  • Gardevoir with Charm, Synchronoise, Shadow Ball
  • Clefable with Charm, Moonblast, Meteor Mash

To Defeat Kingler

Kingler is a Water-type Pokemon weaknesses to Electric and Grass Pokemon.

Thus, fantastic options are:

  • Kartana with Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, Night Slash
  • Raikou with Volt Switch, Wild Charge, Shadow Ball
  • Torterra with Razor Leaf, Frenzy Plant, Stone Edge
  • Ampharos with Volt Switch, Brutal Swing, Thunder Punch

To Defeat Regice

The final battle is against Regice, and it’s quite challenging. But you’ve made it this far, and you can absolutely melt this block of ice. Regice is a pure Ice-Type Pokemon, and it’s weak to Fighting, Fire, Rock, and Steel Pokemon.

Thus, fantastic options are:

  • Terrakion with Double Kick, Sacred Sword, Rock Slide
  • Blaziken with Counter, Blaze Kick, Blast Burn
  • Tyranitar with Smack Down, Crunch, Stone Edge
  • Lucario with Counter, Power-Up Punch, Shadow Ball
  • Machamp with Counter, Cross Chop, Rock Slide

Many of the same Pokemon that are excellent against Persian, so it’s a good idea to bring a Pokemon that can tackle both Persian and Regice. This will hedge your bets against Team GO Rocket’s big boss.
