As you progress in Amnesia: Rebirth, the puzzles become trickier and trickier, including one that has you make your way out of the Fortress Gate. You can’t open the gate with your hands, it’s far too heavy for you alone.
Instead, you’ll need to find a way to blast your way through the gate. To help make the process easier, we’ve put together a guide explaining how to exit through the Fortress Gate in Amnesia: Rebirth.
How To Solve the Fortress Gate Puzzle in Amnesia: Rebirth
The first thing you’ll need to do when attempting to exit the Fortress Gate in Amnesia: Rebirth is enter the tank at the center of the courtyard. There, you’ll find a set of keys.
Grab these, then exit the tank and make your way straight and to the left. Look for a door with a short set of stairs leading down to it. Take the key out of our inventory and interact with the door to unlock it.
Once inside the Arsenal, you’ll need to scavenge for ingredients to make the Gunpowder that’ll fill the large tank shell near the workbench with the Gunpowder recipe sign. Two of the three Gunpowder ingredients can be found in the Arsenal, while the third is all the way back in the Quartermaster’s Stocks.
How to Make Gunpowder
Gunpowder Mix Recipe:
- 1 cup sulfur powder (located in the Arsenal)
- 1 cup milled charcoal (located in the Arsenal)
- 8 cups saltpeter (located in the Quartermaster’s Stocks)
The Saltpeter is located in the Quartermaster’s Stocks, if you don’t have it you’ll have to double back and get it. The other two ingredients are in the Arsenal where you find the workbench.
To get these ingredients, make your way through the left hallway but be wary of a tripwire on the floor that’s attached to a large crossbow. You can jump over it, and in doing so, you’ll trigger it but the arrow will hit the wall behind you.
The first doorway to your right in the next hallway is the kitchen. Inside the kitchen, you’ll find a place to mill your saltpeter and a pot where you can boil ingredients.
You don’t have these ingredients just yet, so ignore the kitchen and continue on down the hallway. You’ll be started by a grisly site of dead soldiers but ignore these and walk over to a hanging rug on your left. Walk through it, then pull that wooden window door shut.
Next, head up the flight of stairs, open the window door there, and step out onto the wooden platform. Walk carefully across it, then jump over to the next platform (note that if you forget to close the window door behind the rug you’ll have to go back inside to close it).
Once you’re inside the area with the soldier holding a grenade, scavenge around collecting ingredients and supplies. The best rule of thumb with Amnesia: Rebirth is to take everything the game allows you to take wherever possible.
Once you’ve collected everything you need, approach the dead soldier in the chair. Remove the string attached to the latch, then interact with the string and pull the grenade.Back as far away as possible while the blast goes off.
We stood near the window we entered from and were ok.
You’ll probably be a little hurt and disoriented after the blast, but you can use Laudanum to help you out. With all of your ingredients in hand, return to the kitchen. Mill your saltpeter in the mill on your right.
After that, boil your sulphur in the pot straight ahead (not the big pot on the counter, the smaller one on the left). With this done, head back over to the workbench. You’ll need to combine everything together into Gunpowder, then take out the Gunpowder from your inventory and interact with the empty shell.
Pull the lever to complete the shell, take it, then head back out to the courtyard.
How To Fire The Tank
Enter the tank, then interact with the controls. You’ll need to pull one lever to load the shell, then pull it again to lock it in place. The other controls can be used to aim the tank towards the gate. We’ve labeled everything in the image above to help you out.
When everything is aimed perfectly, fire the tank and blast the gate. The tank will lose balance and you’ll have a… not so fun time… but you’ll have completed the Fortress Gate puzzle.
To get out of the tank, you’ll need to turn it again so you can open the swinging doors and then step out and continue through the next set of areas.
