Mass Effect lets you choose between two different characters when pursuing a romantic interest. Dr. Liara T’Soni is available to romance regardless of Shepard’s gender since asari are considered gender-less.
Your other option will be Kaidan or Ashley, depending on your character’s gender. Same-sex romances are pretty limited in the series, especially until Mass Effect 3.
How to Romance Dr. Liara T’Soni in Mass Effect
There are a few conversations that will take place allowing you to romance Liara as long as you select the correct options. We’re going to try to be as vague as possible to avoid spoilers while still providing the information you need.
There are a few general guidelines to mention before we get into the specifics.
Locate Liara and have her join your team before the Virmire mission if you intend on romancing her to make sure you don’t lock yourself out of it. We strongly recommend adding Liara to the team after you first leave the Citadel and start going on missions.
Things can get complicated if you’ve already started pursuing one of your human squadmates. If this does happen then you will eventually be confronted and forced to choose.
It’s crucial to stick with Paragon dialogue choices when speaking with Liara. Renegade dialogue options can cause issues and hurt your favor with her.
Outside of those things just make sure to do the following for a successful romance with Liara:
Talk with Liara after every single main mission, specifically Feros, Noveria, Therum, and Virmire. Always select the Investigate dialogue choices on the left side of the conversation wheel, which will cause Liara to open up and discuss her life with you.
When Liara shares that she’s never been romantic with anyone else then just reassure her that you want to take things slow.
When you’re getting closer to the last part of the game and leaving the Citadel section again, make sure to speak with Liara again. Remember to stick to Paragon conversation choices and the romance sequence will start.
