In the original Gungrave, you took on the role of Beyond the Grave, an undead cowboy Frankenstein’s monster who fights with dual pistols and a rocket launcher that’s also a coffin. In the sequel, Gungrave Overdose, Beyond the Grave is back but is joined by two other protagonists the player can choose. Now we’re at Gungrave G.O.R.E., which has all that built up mythology behind it. So does this new, much longer game have multiple characters or did the developers focus on Grave? Turns out there are two other characters, but their implementation might leave Overdose fans wanting.

The rest of this guide could be considered spoilers for Gungrave G.O.R.E., so keep that in mind before reading further. But storytelling isn’t exactly this game’s strong suit, so there isn’t a ton to spoil beyond some novelty here. But there’s your spoiler warning if you need it.
All Playable Characters in Gungrave G.O.R.E. Listed
One of the two playable characters is a recurring character from the Gungrave series, and the other is a brand new character designed for G.O.R.E. specifically. I’ll introduce them with some context about who they are, as well as how their gameplay differs from our main man Beyond the Grave.
Bunji Kugashira
This guy has been around since the beginning. Even before Brandon Heat died and came back as Beyond the Grave. Originally one of the Big Four of Millennion, Bunji, aka The Wolf, was a boss fight in the first Gungrave. Now he’s a “Deadman” just like Grave, coming back from the dead a second time in G.O.R.E.
Bunji plays similarly to Grave, but is a lot more agile. He’s basically Ken to Grave’s Ryu, with similar buttons that have slightly different properties. You can play as him twice in the game, getting one level for himself and a piece of a later stage.
Cheni Angel (Quartz)
Quartz is a new character, introduced as a member of El-Alcangel after being rescued by Mika. She has been affected by SEED, but her transformation was held back before it consumed more than one of her arms. She uses martial arts, alongside freezing powers using her SEED arm. Her kit is a huge difference from the other two, with a focus on melee. There are considerable pros and cons and your mileage there may vary. You only get to play as Quartz in one stage, sadly.
There it is. Gungrave G.O.R.E. has two playable characters, Bunji and Quartz. Unfortunately unlike Gungrave Overdose (in which you could play the whole game as one of three characters), you only get to give these two a whirl for tiny chunks of the 31-stage story.
