You need what Ubisoft calls Creed Points to upgrade Arno’s weapons and equipment in Assassin’s Creed Unity; you can also use them to buy different outfit colors. These actions come in many forms, and you can complete them in both in the single player campaign and co-op.  That said, there’s always an opportunity to earn Creed Points providing you know where to look.
