Fortnite | How to Shakedown IO Guard
The first step when it comes to the “Shakedown an IO Guard” challenge in Fortnite is knowing where to find IO Guards in general.
For those who play Fortnite on a regular or semi-regular basis, you’ll likely have encountered IO Guards before.
They’re essentially pesky nuisances that pop up in metal boxes from underground in various areas across the Fortnite map and will shoot at you and harass you until you either run away and evade them, or shoot at them and knock them all down.
If you aren’t prepared for them, they can potentially overwhelm you, but as a whole they’re mostly just a background annoyance. In the map image above, we’ve circled locations where IO Guards are known to spawn.
You can pick any of these locations, or wander around the map randomly until you encounter IO Guards. The choice is up to you.
We recommend picking up a solid amount of weapons and supplies before you head out in search of an IO Guard for the shakedown challenge.
Even though you only need to shakedown one IO Guard, they spawn in groups meaning you’ll have to subdue all of them in order to give one of them the shakedown.
Alternatively, you could construct some walls to separate you from the rest of the IO Guards while you give one of the knocked down ones a shakedown.

Once you come across a set of IO Guards in Fortnite, you’ll need to shoot at them and deal damage in order to knock them down.
Once you’ve knocked them down and they’re crawling around on the ground, approach them and you’ll see the interactive option to “Shakedown” an IO Guard. It’s the same interact button used to collect items from chests, ammo boxes, etc.
The shakedown will have you pick up the IO Guard and search through their pockets. When the shakedown process is complete, you should see a notification pop up that you’ve completed the challenge and in doing so, have earned 20,000 XP for your trouble.
Finish off the IO Guards, look at the items they’ve dropped to see if they’ve dropped anything you find useful, then head out and work on other Fortnite challenges to earn even more XP.
