When the Shadowbringers expansion was released for Final Fantasy XIV, two new Jobs (character classes) were added to the game. One of them is Gunbreaker, a new Tank (defense) class that incorporates the distinct gunblade weapons made popular in the Final Fantasy universe via Final Fantasy VIII. If you paid for the Shadowbringers Collector’s Edition goodies, you even get a weapon based on Squall’s original gunblade, Revolver. So if you’re looking to try a weapon for a that’s a little out of the ordinary for a Tank, this Job is what you want to try.
Unlocking the Gunbreaker Job in Final Fantasy XIV
Of course, being a Job added in an expansion, you have to unlock the Soul of the Gunbreaker to actually use it. And like the other Jobs, once you unlock it via the initial quest, there’s a full questline that gives you more abilities, gear, and more. The most important factors are knowing what you need to be eligible for the quest, and where you can find it.

In order to unlock the Gunbreaker Job, you do have to be at least level 60. If you want to be a Gunbreaker you don’t need to start all the way back at level 1, but in exchange for that you have to play Final Fantasy XIV for quite a while before you can try it out. Once you do hit level 60, you can find the quest you need in New Gridania.
In New Gridania, you’ll need to find the NPC called Gods’ Quiver Bow. Their exact coordinates are (X: 11.5, Y: 11.9). An easy way to track this person down is to make note of the giant, red quest icon that will be on your map when you visit Gridania before you’re level 60. Once you’re able to take the quest, it’s called The Makings of a Gunbreaker. This quest will take you to the East Shroud, where you’ll have to win a combat encounter and visit a couple more NPCs to complete it. Once you do finish The Makings of a Gunbreaker, you’ll receive the following rewards:
- 167,400 EXP
- 1,094 gil
- Soul of the Gunbreaker
- High Steel Gunblade
- Outsider’s Attire Coffer
As you can see, it’s everything you’ll need to get started as a brand new Gunbreaker. The Outsider’s Attire Coffer will give you a full level 60 armor set that is appropriately snazzy, and you’ll be able to either take on the next quest for the Job (Hired Gunblades) or go about the rest of your business. If you’re hitting level 60 for the first time, you have a ton of content ahead of you, after all.
