How to Find the Cow Level in Diablo 4

After hundreds of hours of datamining and bovine murders, we stand at the gate of the elusive Cow Level. And while no one has managed to breach the doors, we’re getting very close. Here’s everything you need to do to ensure you’re prepared to tackle the cow level when the last step is revealed. There are a lot of complicated steps.

Step 1. Kill 666 Cows.

No, I’m not joking. That’s a lot of cows, and you’ll need to find and murder them. Fortunately, someone was good enough to create a map where every cow in Sanctuary can be found. The link to that map is here. Unfortunately.

This counter is specific to a character.

The final cow location is also very important, as it determines which of the three material pieces you get. There are three possible materials that a cow can drop. These materials are:

  • Bloody Wooden Shard – obtained if you kill the final cow in Hawezar or Kehjistan.
  • Musky Tome – obtained if you get the final kill in Scosglen or Fractured Peaks.
  • Metallic Fragment – obtained if you get the final kill in the Dry Steppes.

Once you get that final kill, a timer for 666,666 seconds begins, which prevents you from getting another material again on that character, that’s 185 hours, or a little over one week, if you’re curious.

So, what does that mean? This means you need three characters on the same server. With each character, you’ll need to kill 666 cows. So, my sorcerer will have the Bloody Wooden Shard. My Necromancer will have the Musky Tome. And my Barbarian will have the Metallic Fragment. If you don’t have a high-level character, that’s fine. You can roll an entirely new one to farm out these materials.

Step 2. Take your material to the Cow Shrine in Ked Bardu.

In Ked Bardu, between the jeweler, wardrobe, and apothecary, there is a cistern with four cows on each corner. Drop the material into the pool of water to purify it. Once all three have been purified, you’ll receive a key.

As you do so, each of the Oxen Gods at the corner of the pool will become interactable. Upon interacting with the tree Oxen God statues, the Strange Key will drop.

Step 3. Take the Strange Key to the Forlorn Hovel

The Strange key unlocks the Forlorn Hovel in Scosglen, to the far north. You’ll find a basement with 28 cows inside the Forlorn Hovel inside. Kill all 28 cows, and they’ll drop a Stamina Potion. Drink this Stamina potion, and you’ll get an unknown buff that lasts five minutes.

Unfortunately, we’re not sure what to do with the Stamina Potion yet. But if you want to experiment, the Forlorn Hovel is open permanently once you’ve unlocked it. That means you can reset your character by logging out and then back in to stack multiple of these Stamina Potions in your inventory, if you want to experiment.
