During today’s Destiny livestream, Bungie has officially confirmed that there are no current plans to develop Destiny 3. Instead, the team has announced a set of three expansions that will be arriving over the next three years, the first of which is coming in September 2020.

Instead of expanding the world into a Destiny 3, Bungie believes that it still has plenty left to explore within the current game, and plans to do so over the next three expansions. “Put plainly, we are investing in Destiny 2 for years to come,” reads the official Bungie blog. “We don’t believe a sequel is the right direction for the game and for the past two years we have been investing all of our development effort into new content, gameplay, and new engine features that directly support a single evolving world in Destiny 2.”

The blog goes on to explain how the developers regret moving on from the original Destiny so quickly, sharing that the sequel ended up fracturing the community, which is a “mistake we don’t want to repeat by making a Destiny 3.”

While some might have been looking forward to all of the new content that would come with a third installment, Bungie has no plans to stop supporting the series or creating stories. As we mentioned above, the development team has promised consistent, major support through 2022 with tons of new expansions, stories, characters, lore, and more. Further, Bungie has confirmed that all content from Destiny 2 will transfer to next-gen consoles.

The future of Destiny 2 will kick off with the release of the Beyond Light expansion in September and will be followed by The Witch Queen in 2021 and Lightfall in 2022. So while there is no Destiny 3 in the near future, there is still plenty of content to look forward to in the coming weeks, months, and years.  In fact, the Season of Arrivals update officially released on June 9 and will prepare the game for the Beyond Light expansion later this fall. This update will act as a prologue for the upcoming expansion and will see the arrival of mysterious Pyramid ships and a new dungeon.
