Will There be Xbox One X Black Friday Deals?

This is the big question. Xbox One X launches on November 7 and is set to cost $499 on day one, so it seems unlikely that Microsoft or retailers will want to take chunks out of that figure just three weeks later or they risk irritating consumers. Then again, it’s not out of the realms of possibility that we could see a slightly discounted bundle, or a cheap UHD movie thrown in to sweeten the deal. Watch this space…

Which Xbox One Should I Buy on Black Friday?

You’re probably going to have three bundle options this Black Friday: the original Xbox One 500GB model at a very low price, the Xbox One S 500GB or 1TB model with a game or two for a very reasonable price, or the Xbox One X with a game or UHD movie for marginally less than it cost at launch a few weeks previously.

If you own or plan to buy a 4K TV in the next year, it’s hard not to recommend the Xbox One X. Microsoft has made a lot of noise about how it’s the most powerful console ever, but the point is that all future games will be optimised to play in ultra high definition and in most cases at 60fps. If you’re rocking a screen that can deliver the pixels, there’s surely no other choice. Technically the S is also an option for 4K fans, given that it supports 4K Blu-rays and streaming services, but it seems a bit silly to rule yourself out of 4K games for the sake of saving a hundred bucks or so.

If you aren’t part of the 4K conversation and don’t plan to be, then the choice is simpler: Xbox One S is a nicer looking, smaller unit and you can get a larger hard disk capacity, which matters in these days of 50GB+ install sizes, while the original model is a boxier, less attractive option that plays everything fine and will probably save you some money. If you just plan to put the console in the cupboard under the TV, maybe go for the old boy. Just get used to navigating that disk space management screen.

How to Prepare for Black Friday

Black Friday takes place on November 25, 2016 and looks to be one of the biggest shopping days in recent history. To make sure you’re ready for the big day, your first order of business should be to determine what it is you want to purchase this holiday. Are you in the market for a new TV to take advantage of the 4K output of Project Scorpio? Do you need a Kinect to play some of the older games? Perhaps you’re even in the market for a gaming PC so you can take advantage of the share program between Xbox One and Games for Windows.

Whatever you need, make a list now and add to it as you come up with more items you want to buy. Once you have a decent list, start adding the costs of those items. It’s good to not only know what you want to buy, but also know how much you’ll be saving. If you can get an Xbox One game for 50 dollars, that’s a decent deal but not as good as an Xbox One console for 200 dollars. The amount you’re saving should heavily influence what you buy on Black Friday.

It’s also important to have a budget planned out in advance. Save money every month between now and November, then plan out exactly how much you can spend and still be okay. Don’t spend everything you have. Instead, set a few different limits. Let’s say you have 500 dollars saved up for Black Friday. Set your first limit at 350 dollars. Once you reach that limit, evaluate what you’ve purchased. Do you have a good haul or are you still missing a lot of items? If you’ve got a good haul already, save the extra 150 dollars for shopping later on down the line. Even if you don’t have everything you want, can you get everything by spending only 150 more dollars? If not, it may still be best to stop at 350.
