Resident Evil 3 Remake Review: Adrenaline-Fueled Horror at Its Best

The Resident Evil 3 Remake will have players at the edge of their seats as they fight to survive in Raccoon City.

The Resident Evil 2 Remake received critical acclaim thanks to its ability to stay true to what made the original game so good with impressive graphics but also injecting plenty of unique content into the title to deliver a whole new experience for players. This success is why fans of the legendary horror game franchise were excited to hear that Capcom was giving Resident Evil 3 the remake treatment. This sequel sees players take on the role of Jill Valentine, who must survive being hunted by the terrifying Nemesis Tyrant who wants nothing more than to see her death while trying to escape a Raccoon City that is on the brink of utter collapse and destruction. Resident Evil 3 Remake Review

(WARNING: Spoilers Below)

Now, I never played the original Resident Evil 3, so I was extremely excited to dive into the world of the remake and experience one of the most successful experiences in the video game world. There was no disappointment from me regarding being able to dive into this adrenaline-fueled immediately thanks to the Nemesis busting down the apartment wall of Jill in the first couple of minutes. It was both horrifying and thrilling time seeing Jill fail dramatically on inflicting any damage to the mysterious monster while it did its best to eliminate her. My heart was pounding through the whole section helping Jill escape her apartment building where the Nemesis seemed to have a powerful sense of always knowing where Jill was. The opening sequence to the Resident Evil 3 Remake is no doubt one of the best I have experienced in some time.

This cat and mouse dynamic between the Nemesis and Jill was one of the very best parts of the game. Now, I was expecting this, considering it was the main focus of the game’s marketing ahead of its official release. However, getting to live out the moments where I was running for my life and knew there was nothing I could do besides trying my best to slow the Tyrant down just a little so I could make my escape to a safe area. The highlights of the game’s story were no doubt the multiple boss fights that players engaged in with the Nemesis. Each one had its uniqueness that honestly made them feel like you were fighting a completely different enemy every time. My favorite entry in the Resident Evil 3 Remake Nemesis boss fight series was no doubt the second one where it first mutated into a more animal-like creature that ran on the walls of buildings like a panther. Going back and forth with the monstrosity with my grenade launcher was an intense fight. It was made only better by the following cutscene that had my jaw drop when the Nemesis was able to infect Jill with the T-virus when you thought victory was finally achieved over your stalker.

Experiences like the one above were made only better by the gorgeous graphics of the Resident Evil 3 Remake. I had never seen a modern game before where the hair on them looked and moved so realistically when you were aiming with a weapon. Not to mention the impressive cinematic nature of each in-game cutscene and non-playable action scene put a smile on my face every time I was watching them. These graphics also helped to make each of the fights I had with the creatures of the Resident Evil 3 Remake, thanks to them looking incredibly realistic for being abominations created by a dangerous virus.

One of my favorite aspects of this title was the puzzle-like situations it put players in to find specific items they need to progress through areas of the story. I never was left without a strong sense of satisfaction following my discovery of a much-needed thing after figuring out how to solve where it was located and how to obtain it for my inventory. Elements like this were a nice break from the frantic and horror-filled story where I could catch my breath and ultimately help Jill and Carlos become stronger characters for their fights against the infected.

Resident Evil 3 Remake Review

Speaking of Carlos, I enjoyed the two missions where players were able to step into the shoes of the side character and enjoy the Resident Evil 3 Remake in a new way. Jill was, of course, a great character who I enjoyed playing throughout the game, but like the puzzles above, the ability to play as Carlos helped to break up the game and add a new element for players to experience.

Gameplay was another bonus I enjoyed every time I booted up the game. The fluid movement and entertaining gun gameplay of the game provided me with plenty of exciting moments, especially against the most serious threats that the title threw at me.

The overall story did feel a tad short to me, but that is just more of an example of how much I enjoyed it and wanted to have another 10 hours to experience.

There is no doubt that the Resident Evil 3 Remake was a rounding success in my book and provided me with one of the most entertaining single-play experiences I have had in a while. Fans of the franchise and newcomers would be doing themselves a great disservice by not jumping into the terrifying and thrilling world that this title brings to the table.
