Wolfenstein: The New Colossus was a smashing success on the Nintendo Switch, which is what made the Youngblood announcement even more exciting for the hybrid console. Unfortunately for those that prefer physical cartridges, however, the upcoming Wolfenstein title will be limited to digital-only, though will contain the box art available for sale.
The news of the digital-only decision comes via various retailers all over the world. According to retailers, the physical case of the game will have the case itself, but not the cartridge inside. Instead it will house a digital download version of the game, applying to both the standard and the deluxe versions of the title.
One possibility for this decision outside of the usual “move to digital” movement in games is that this was the only viable way to have Youngblood launch on the Nintendo Switch at the same time as its Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC counterparts. The New Order saw a significant gap between its first launch and its debut on the Switch, so perhaps this was the shortcut that the developers felt was needed to promise a same-day launch on all platforms.
Digital or not, the game is poised to release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch on July 26th. To learn more about the upcoming title from Bethesda:
“Set in 1980, 19 years after BJ Blazkowicz ignited the second American Revolution, Wolfenstein®: Youngblood introduces the next Blazkowicz generation to the fight against the Nazis. Play as one of BJ’s twin daughters, Jess and Soph, as you search for your missing father in Nazi-occupied Paris.”
