Wii U Will Be Region Locked

If you're looking to import Bayonetta 2 early, you're in for some bad news.
This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

One cool thing about having a region-free system is being able to play imports released in Japan before they come out in the U.S. – sort of like what we’re doing with Max Anarchy (Anarchy Reigns) on the PlayStation 3. But it appears Nintendo isn’t quite ready to pick up on this logic.

Nintendo has confirmed that like the Wii, the Wii U will be region-locked, meaning that the U.S. system will only be able to play U.S. games, Japanese systems will only be able to play Japanese games and so on. This is not the first time Nintendo’s taken up region locking with systems (it did so with the Nintendo 3DS) and it definitely doesn’t look like it’ll be the last.

What do you think? Do you believe that Nintendo should lighten up on the region coding and let us have fun with import games, or do you think they have a point in making the system exclusively for its market’s software? Sound off below and let us know!

The Wii U hits U.S. stores November 18th.
