Unicorn Overlord Will Never Come to PC, Apparently

Imagine playing it on Steam Deck.

According to ATLUS Production Manager Akiyasu Yamamoto, tactical RPG Unicorn Overlord will not be making its way to PC any time soon, stating that it was a decision made by Vanillaware, the game’s developer. It will only be released on its launch platforms of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch.

In an interview with Destructoid on March 7, 2024, Yamamoto was asked about the possibility of Unicorn Overlord making its way to PC in the future. “As a publisher, we would like to deliver it to PC users as well, but per our agreement with Vanillaware, we are only releasing on console,” he responded. “In other words, there are no plans to port it to PC currently.”

While this is unsurprising as Vanillaware (13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir) has never published a game for PC, this didn’t stop fans from requesting it appear on marketplaces like Steam. One user took to Reddit to express their disappointment in a thread with almost 70 comments in agreement at the time of writing. “It’s disheartening to see them seemingly out of touch with the PC gaming community, especially since they have decided to support all console platforms, including Xbox,” they wrote.

Japan’s PC gaming market has always been lower than in the West, which was likely a factor in Vanillaware’s decision to avoid PC in the past. That said, in 2022, it saw a 43% growth compared to 2021, increasing from 131.3 billion yen to 189.2 billion yen, according to PC Gamer. So, if the developer still refuses to release a game on the platform, even with the market booming, it’s probably safe to assume they never will.

As for why? We may never know. Unicorn Overlord players will just have to stick to console or not play it at all once it releases on March 8, 2024.
