Gaming companies have started to dip its toes into NFT’s these past few months. Most recently we saw publisher Team17 announce the MetaWorms NFT project. In less than 24 hours Team17 has already canceled the project due to overwhelming backlash by studios and fans.
Team17 Reverses MetaWorms NFT Project Less Than 24 Hours Later
Team17 put out a statement on Twitter that you can read below.
Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project.
We have listened to our Teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space.

On top of that, studios that work with Team17 such as AggroCrab the developer of Going Under, and Overcooked studio Ghost Town Games have both put out statements regarding its feelings on the matter. Both of these statements can be seen below.
Ghost Town Games cites “We think they carry too great an environmental and social cost” and ask that you voice your concerns to community managers with kindness.

AggroCrab took it a step further and announced they will not be working with Team17 on any future projects, stating “we will not be working with them on further titles, and encourage other indie developers to do the same until this decision is reversed.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a game announce an NFT project and have it swiftly reversed. Just a month ago we saw this exact situation happen with S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 and developer GSC Game World.
How long will this cycle continue? It doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon, and I am curious to see what studio tries to do this next.
