Exploding Rabbit’s homebrew action game Super Mario Bros. Crossover is a delightful little retro trip. It basically takes Super Mario Bros. and lets you play as various characters from the 8-bit era, including Samus Aran from Metroid, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden and Bill from Contra.
The game is totally free to play online and it’s about to get even better. The developer has introduced a new Crossover 3.0 expansion, which will feature levels from the Japan-only Super Mario Bros. game that came out for the Sharp X1 and the NEC-PC8801 PCs. These are brand new to our shores and they should be lots of fun. The game will also include various new power-ups as well as difficulty settings for all types of players.
No word yet on its release, but it should be out sometime this year. In the meantime, you can check out Exploding Rabbit’s page for more details and view the trailer here. Talk about a blast from the past…
