Best of all is the story – Injustice has a great story behind it, even though the multiplayer fights are still awesome on their own level.  Story mode will let you play as multiple characters, discovering bits and pieces as to what happened in Metropolis and who the “real” villain behind everything is.  (Hint: it’s not actually Lex Luthor, believe it or not.)

So in our latest Spoiler Alert, we’ve got a breakdown of the Injustice story.  As always, there are some spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t played the game yet you might want to hold off until you beat it.  Otherwise, read on…

The story begins with the city of Metropolis ravaged by a nuclear blast, with millions killed.  The Joker has been incarcerated for the crime and Batman is asking why he would do such a thing.  Superman soon bursts through the wall, looking for some answers of his own.  It turns out that Lois Lane, Superman’s love, died in the blast along with their unborn child.  Joker taunts him about this and Superman, knocking Batman aside, murders Joker off-screen.

From there, the story switches to a flashback with several heroes and villains clashing in a still existent Metropolis.  The Joker has his hands on a nuclear device and race to stop him.  When they get there right as Joker’s about to hit the button , a dimensional portal opens taking most of them with it.

As soon as they come to, Batman is seen as a fugitive and has to evade capture, and the other heroes try to piece what just happened.  Aquaman returns to Atlantis and finds the Flash and Shazam explaining that Superman has built a regime where he rules over the city out of rage after what happened to Lois.  Aquaman refuses to join them, resulting in battles where they’re both laid out.  The “alternate” Aquaman also shows up and is also defeated.  Then Aquaman’s sworn enemy Ares appears and agrees to teleport him to an alternate location after a quick brawl.  Aquaman discovers that Batman has found members of an Insurgency, led by an alternate Batman, that are fighting back against Superman.  Surprisingly enough, they have partnered with Lex Luthor, who is not a criminal in this world.

After battling Raven and Cyborg, rescuing a captive Deathstroke, and then tussling with Sinestro and Yellow Lantern (the alternative version of himself), Green Lantern joins the insurgents.  Batman then explains that they’ve gotten their hands on a Kryptonite weapon that can stop Superman in his tracks, though DNA samples from four other heroes are needed in order to activate it, in order to avoid someone making a selfish decision.  The portal was then opened to bring the heroes from the still-existing Metropolis world to theirs in order to activate the weapon, as the others have joined up with Superman’s regime, mostly out of fear for their safety.

Shortly thereafter, the Batman from the regular universe is captured and Joker has aligned himself with the “alternate” Harley Quinn, who still takes a fancy to him.  The Regime forces attack led by Nightwing and Hawkgirl, but the heroes from our universe save them and guide them to the Batcave, where the weapon is being kept.  In our universe, Superman, Flash and Cyborg attempt to save their comrades, but Cyborg gets sucked in the “alternate” universe.  He runs into Lex Luthor and Deathstroke, confusing them for villains after hearing how they vow to destroy “alternate” Superman.  However, the other heroes convince him to join up.

The heroes gain control of the teleportation system in the nearby Watchtower, but find themselves on an impromptu rescue mission when the Justice League Batman is scheduled for execution.  In the midst of it, Luthor attempts to zap Superman with the cannon but somehow fails, resulting in him getting killed.  Superman, enraged by what humanity thinks of him, vows to destroy Metropolis and Gotham City to show just what he can really do.  In the midst of this, alternate Shazam tries to stop him but is killed.

The other members of Superman’s regime then join the others, fearing they would get the same treatment.  They plan on bringing the Justice League Superman in to stop him, but are captured by the Regime when their hideout is raided.

In the ensuing fight, Wonder Woman receives a tip from Ares after she arrives on Themyscira, learning that the Amazons are helping Superman carry out his destructive plan.  After defeating the alternate Ares and Raven, Wonder Woman successfully convinces the Amazons to work with her rather than Superman.  However, the armies of Atlantis are still helping him, forcing them into battle.

As the joined heroes try to stop enraged Superman, Batman says that the real Superman will come… and he does after defeating Black Adam and Aquaman.  However, he soon finds his hands full with Doomsday in his own Fortress of Solitude.  He defeats him and traps him in the Phantom Zone, then tries to convince the “alternate” Superman that Lois would’ve been disgusted with his actions to no avail and an epic fight ensues.

The “alternate” Superman is defeated and locked away in a prison where red sun radiation keeps his powers at bay and the rest of his Regime is locked up.  Batman hopes Superman never has to find out just what he could be capable of if he has to go that far.  And everything is restored back to normal in both worlds.

However, in the ending scene we see the “alternate” Superman locked away in his prison cell with his eyes glowing red.  Clearly, all his power hasn’t been drained…

The story is fantastic and the rest of the game is awesome too, between the challenge-filled S.T.A.R. Labs and the multiplayer combat.  Check out Injustice: Gods Among Us now on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U.
