Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired Firewalk Studios, a new studio founded in 2018, working on a multiplayer experience. Sony has been building a portfolio of live-service-based studios, such as Bungie, which continues to align with this mantra.
Sony Interactive Entertainment Acquires Firewalk Studios For New Multiplayer Experience
The studio is led by studio head Tony Hsu (Previously GM and SVP of Destiny) and game director Ryan Ellis (Previously Creative Director at Bungie.) It currently has roughly 150 employees.
Back in 2021, Firewalk and Sony announced their partnership to work on a multiplayer experience, and now, in 2023, Sony is acquiring Firewalk Studios for an undisclosed amount of money.
While neither team has spoken about the actual game its developing, all we know is that the studio is focused on making a multiplayer experience to expand PlayStation Studio’s portfolio.
Tony Hsu and Ryan Ellis released a statement that can be read in full on the PlayStation Blog, but below, you can find a small excerpt.
“Today we’re taking the next natural step and joining PlayStation Studios. We’ve worked closely with Hermen and the very talented team at PlayStation for years, helping to make our new game even better. To join PlayStation Studios is to formally become part of a family that has produced many of the most storied games of our age, and we are honored.”
Firewalk Studios’ new game will be an original IP and is reportedly working closely with Bungie and Haven to ensure that the game reaches the level PlayStation Studios expects.
It’s likely we won’t see this project for a while, but it’s another thing PlayStation fans have to look forward to.
PlayStation has yet to reveal more information on Spider-Man 2, which is still slated for 2023. We hope to hear about PlayStation’s offerings for the rest of the year soon.
