Sonic is in a weird place right now. But that’s only because the Blue Blur hit a surprisingly high peak, and things have been pretty quiet since. We still don’t know what Sega has planned on the videogame side of things, but Hollywood is loud and clear.
We knew for a while the successful Sonic the Hedgehog movie had a sequel on the way, but Paramount dropped its first teaser trailer today.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Teaser Drops a Release Date and Unbelievably Sick Trailer Music
This is as teasy as teaser trailers can get, which makes sense due to the pandemic and all. The visual effects company that made the first one was also shut down not long after the movie came out, so who knows what’s going on there.
But for now, we got a look at the sequel’s new logo, and a release date that if everything goes well, could be many folk’s first movie back in theaters post-vaccine. That’s optimistic, but for now Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is aimed at an April 8, 2022 release date.
As teased in the first movie’s post-credits scene, the big hook for Sonic 2 is the inclusion of Sonic’s longtime sidekick Tails. That’s appropriate, considering Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis was also the first appearance of the floaty, little sidekick.
So the “2” in the title has some cute little tails on it, and we’re here for it. Also, good lord is that some of the sickest trailer music of all time. Trailer music is never a guarantee for the actual movie release, as many times you’re just hearing things like samples or shared music assets mashed up with loud orchestral synth because the real score isn’t made yet.
But that little slice of Sonic 2’s Emerald Hill Zone theme cut with booming trailer orchestra cues is something I wish I could get more than five seconds of.
Anyway that’s all for now when it comes to Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Rumors of Knuckles coming in have also been floating around recently, but barely any casting has been confirmed and filming hasn’t even started yet.
When more does come around you can bet I’ll be yelling about it right here at Prima Games.
