It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything from Sega’s long-lost Zaxxon arcade series. First gaining some buzz in the 80’s, the last we saw of it was in the form of a poorly realized Sega 32X release called Zaxxon Motherbase 2000. But don’t worry, Sega hasn’t forgotten.
The company has announced today that it is bringing the series back for a new iOS/mobile release, which is coming sometime over the next few weeks. But this isn’t the isometric shooter we used to know. Nope, Zaxxon Escape is a whole new game.
Instead of shooting your way through space, you’re now flying your way through a facility that’s coming apart at the seams, and you’ll need to avoid dangers and enemies as you try to make your escape. Think of it as a recreation of Return of the Jedi’s escape from the Death Star scene, but controllable. That’s kind of the idea.
An exact release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s not too far off. In the meantime, you can get a taste of what Zaxxon had to offer – and will with Escape – in the teaser trailer here. We can only hope that Sega will include the original arcade game as an unlockable bonus. It’s so much fun.
