Say Goodbye to Toxic Chat in COD MW3… AI Will Be Listening

Price might put soap in your mouth

When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launches on November 10, there will be an AI chat mod that listens for toxic voice communication in each match. This is the latest push from Activision to combat the infamously toxic chat every Call of Duty game, and it will start a beta phase as early as August 30 with the release of MW2 Season 5 Reloaded.

In North America, both Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 will have the ToxMod AI module listening in on all voice chat. This includes parties, game chat, and death comms as well. This will serve as the beta testing phase before the full system is implemented into Modern Warfare 3.

Activision released a blog about the new ToxMod AI that aims to explain how the moderation will work. According to the blog post, the AI will “identify in real-time and enforce against toxic speech—including hate speech, discriminatory language, harassment, and more.” Of course, this raises some questions about the tone of Call of Duty lobbies going forward.

Within the Q&A for the ToxMod AI, Activision claims that the moderation will be based on the current Call of Duty Code of Conduct, which “allows for trash-talk and friendly banter.” However, the extent of the trash talk or banter has no details.

The AI voice chat moderator won’t take instant action and will essentially flag players who use any of the “banned” keywords pertaining to toxic speech. These will then be reviewed and may result in a suspension or a ban for repeat offenders. So far, over 1 million accounts on MW2 and Warzone have been chat or text-restricted as a result of the current moderation.
