PSA: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Has a Cute Kingdom Hearts Easter Egg

Now I want to try it.

Developers putting Easter Eggs into their games is nothing new, but it’s still exciting when you spot one. And there’s an Easter Egg from the Kingdom Hearts series in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, hidden in plain sight. Note that this article has minor story spoilers, so read on at your own risk.

The Easter Egg happens at the end of Chapter 8: All That Glitters after leaving Corel Prison. Rude and Elena are hot on the tail of Cloud and his gang, following them in a helicopter while watching a certain angry Shinra Space and Aeronautics Director attempt to face the protagonists in battle. If you look closely during this scene, Elena is munching on a bar of Sea Salt Ice Cream.

Even if you have not played the Kingdom Hearts series before, you’ve no doubt heard of Sea Salt Ice Cream somewhere. If you haven’t, it is a dessert found in Twilight Town and Radiant Garden in Kingdom Hearts 2, which has become one of the most notable items from the Square Enix x Disney crossover game.

It’s unsurprising that a Kingdom Hearts Easter Egg has made its way into Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, given that one of its Game Directors, Tetsuya Nomura, is the reason why Sea Salt Ice Cream found its way into Kingdom Hearts 2. In an interview translated by KH2.co.uk in 2012, Nomura was asked about why the dessert was added to the Disney game, a title he also directed, to which he responded, “When the Tokyo DisneySea opened and I went there by invitation, they were selling Sea Salt Ice Creams at the time. You would think “salty ice-cream” seems a pretty weird idea, right? I was like “What is this?” so I tried it out and it turned out to be very tasty.”
