The studio, behind the recently released Kid Icarus: Uprising for Nintendo 3DS, has reportedly closed, according to various reports. The studio’s official website posted a somber goodbye, explaining that it had shut down on June 30th, and the website would also be following suit at the end of this month.
Founded in 2009 by Masahiro Sakurai, the mastermind behind the Super Smash Bros. games, Project Sora was formed to bring Kid Icarus and other franchises back to life. Uprising was the only game to be released from the studio, and though it was met with modest critical acclaim and decent sales, it doesn’t look like it was the powerhouse performer that Nintendo was expecting.
Though the studio has shut down, Sakurai and several of its key members will continue to keep busy, as they’re working with Namco Bandai on the upcoming 3DS and Wii U sequels to the Super Smash Bros. series. So at least some of them still have jobs, which is good.
We’ll miss you, Project Sora. You made a small but significant little dent in the game industry.
