Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Gets Major New PC Features on GOG
FINALLY!
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is one of my favorite games of all time, but its PC version hasn’t been the best way to experience it on modern hardware. Thankfully, the incredible folks at the GOG Preservation Program have updated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time with several features to bring it up to modern standards.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Gets the GOG Preservation Treatment
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was already available on GOG, but today’s upgrade officially adds it to the GOG Preservation Program. This makes it “2026-ready,” with the team at GOG adding the following features:
- A lightweight compatibility wrapper for modern hardware.
- Native widescreen and ultrawide support across modern resolutions and aspect ratios.
- Dynamic camera scaling that adjusts the FOV based on your monitor’s aspect ratio.
- An option to lock your mouse cursor to the game window when using multiple monitors.
- An FPS limiter with customizable frame rate caps.
- A new in-game overlay, accessible with F11, for quickly adjusting the FPS limit and FOV.
- The original 4:3 main menu layout preserved to avoid issues with its hard-coded UI.
- A sensible FOV limit of 110% on ultrawide displays to prevent stretching and visual glitches.
- General stability improvements and verification for modern systems.
Here’s an indepth breakdown by the team detailing the challenges they faced while updating the title for modern PCs and the steps they had to take to get everything working:
This means you no longer need to hunt down and install several patches to get Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time running properly on a modern PC. You can simply download the GOG version and jump straight into the game for a more seamless experience.
Being added to the Preservation Program also means that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will continue getting updates if any compatibility issues arise with new OS or hardware updates. Since this update is handled by GOG, you can also get direct support for it through the client.
It’s also currently 70% off on GOG, with the discount available until August 23, 2026. If you’ve missed out on this gem of a game, I highly recommend it. It’s still the best game in the series, in my opinion, with an incredibly memorable cast of characters and a story that’ll stick with you for a while.
