Post Malone Headlines Free Virtual Concert For Pokémon’s 25th Anniversary Celebration

The announcement from The Pokémon Company today was interesting to read, to say the least.

In celebration of Pokémon’s 25th anniversary, there will be a free virtual concert as part of the P25 Music program which goes live on the Pokémon YouTube channel, Twitch channel, and website near the end of the month on February 27.

Headlining that virtual concert is none other than Post Malone.

“Taking place on Saturday, February 27—better known as Pokémon Day—the event will be an online party not just for Pokémon fans but for all music fans around the world. It will also serve as the launch activation for the franchise’s yearlong P25 Music program. The Pokémon Company International has teamed up with Universal Music Group to bring this concert and more music surprises to life throughout 2021 as part of P25 Music,” the press release from The Pokemon Company reads.

“P25 Music is a collaboration with some of music’s biggest names to create new songs, styles, and pop-culture moments, all through the lens of Pokémon. Pop icon Katy Perry was announced last month as the program’s premier artist. ‘I’ve been a Pokémon fan for a long time, so the opportunity to headline the Pokémon Day concert celebrating 25 years is awesome,’ said Post Malone.

The concert will be free to view on the official Pokémon YouTube channel, Pokémon’s official Twitch channel, and on Pokémon’s 25th anniversary website beginning at 7:00 p.m. EST / 4:00 p.m. PST on February 27. Pokémon will unveil more P25 Music details at the end of the concert, so fans will want to tune in for more upcoming collaboration surprises.”

As mentioned in the press release, Katy Perry is another famous artist participating in Pokémon’s 25th anniversary celebrations. At the end of the concert, we’ll reportedly get additional details about P25 Music.

It sounds like we’ll get the chance to hear about other artists that will be hopping on board to collaborate, and we can’t help but be curious as to what artists The Pokémon Company will partner with next given how unexpected the Post Malone collaboration feels.

Even The Pokémon Company is aware that the announcement might take some fans by surprise, with the announcement video description reading:

“Pokémon.

Post Malone.

It’s the concert you never saw coming, Trainers.”

Fans of Post Malone may be less surprised, knowing the artist is a huge Pokémon fan. In a report from Billboard, the following information can be found which helps the announcement make a lot more sense in context.

“Malone, who for the record still has a Game Boy Color specifically so he can play Pokémon, tells Billboard it’s sentimental for him and the franchise to be 25 at the same time. “I’ve been a fan for such a long time, kind of grew up with it,” he says. “Celebrating 25 years is a big deal, so we decided to do it together.” (The rapper turned 25 himself last July.)”

There’s something really wholesome about hearing how much Pokémon means to the artist, and how both are turning 25 the same year. It makes it feel somewhat less random at the very least.

All in all, we’re interested to see what the virtual concert will look like on February 27 and what the response to it will be. To learn more about it, we’ve embedded the announcement trailer below.

Stay tuned, as we’ll also be posting updates about the announcements that take place at the tail end of the concert for future P25 Music collaborations here on Prima Games!
