Sony Online Entertainment’s swashbuckling MMO has become a free-to-play game.

There’s absolutely no price to pay for the download with no monthly subscription fee, though Treasure Aisle items will cost a little. That there be the in-game shop, where you can buy upgrades, clothing, consumables, missions, pets and ships.

If you want to gain a few advantages then it’s possible to pay $14.99 a month for a series of perks and discounts on the Free Account and Premium Account membership levels. For more info then set ship over to the Pirates of the Burning Sea site.

The game has been available for a year now and has been added to and changed a large amount over that time. This includes the addition of an expansion pack by the name of Power & Prestige (which came out last month).
