Obsidian’s Next RPG is Called Avowed

Following The Outer Worlds, Obsidian's next game has been revealed.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

After showing off what’s coming next for The Outer Worlds, Obsidian revealed its next major project. It’s called Avowed, and it will be another massive, first-person and open world RPG. Set in Eora, the same world of Pillars of Eternity, Avowed will be a new story coming to the Xbox One Series X, Xbox Game Pass, and Windows 10. Check out the announcement trailer below:

No stranger to smaller-scale projects and a history of quality control issues, Avowed seems to have the full backing of Microsoft, and as Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty stated, “this is Obsidian at their best, and [Avowed] is being built from the ground up to take full advantage of the power of Xbox Series X.”

We don’t have any information yet on what exactly Avowed’s connection is to Pillars of Eternity, beyond being set in the same world. Eora is a huge fantasy world with plenty of lore and politics, so really the sky’s the limit. We did see an example of the first-person perspective of Awoken in the trailer, with the player character brandishing a sword in one hand, and powering up the other with some sort of rune-powered magic.

The Pillars of Eternity universe is a big deal for Obsidian, as the 2015 spiritual successor to the Baldur’s Gate series is arguably what saved the studio from closing down. Obsidian was facing financial trouble due to cancelled projects, the infamous bonus incident with Bethesda, and other issues. Pillars of Eternity saw Obsidian turn to crowdfunding, and after breaking Kickstarter records the idea turned into a series.

Pillars of Eternity 2 followed a few years later, after a successful crowdfunding campaign on Fig, a Kickstarter competitor Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart is involved with. Obviously, this was followed up by The Outer Worlds, which many fans consider a sort of post-Fallout: New Vegas redemption story. Along the way Obsidian was acquired by Microsoft, leading to this reveal for Avowed.

This is all the information we have on Avowed for now, but Obsidian has already launched a new website for the game which will be updated as more information is released. In the meantime, you can check out the upcoming DLC for The Outer Worlds, which was also announced during the show and is coming out this summer.

Are you excited for the next big game from Obsidian, presumably powered by more money than ever before? Does this expansion of the Eora world have you excited, or are you still sweating about clearing Pillars of Eternity from your backlog? Talk to us over at Twitter or Facebook!
