John Koller, Sony’s director of hardware marketing in the US, told Engadget, “you look at the Vita consumer and a very high percentage, almost all of them, own a PS3”. Koller wasn’t too forthcoming with facts and figures behind this bold statement but added, “We tell our PlayStation fans all the time that what the Wii U is offering is something that Vita and PS3 can do quite easily.”
That means Sony can pick and choose which games it wants to support with a touch-screen controller concept, Koller added.
“It’s dependent on the content. We need to make sure the content isn’t force-fed. And, to us, making sure that the gamer receives the right type of experience is what’s most important. We’re going to pick our spots, but that technology does certainly exist here. Whether we want to bundle the hardware together remains to be seen “
LittleBigPlanet 2 is a prime example of the two systems working in unison; the Vita hooks up to the PS3 and is used as a touchscreen controller. This Gamespot video shows the combined capabilities in action.
Although the combined cost of a Vita and PS3 are significantly more than a Wii U, Koller reiterates the fact that a very high percentage of Vita players will already own a PS3.
Koller also informed PS3 users that they have an “incredible line-up” of games to come and Sony will be supporting the PS3 for at least another few years.
