Say what you will about Nintendo – they know gamers. While they may not have presented everything that people wanted to see a few weeks ago at E3, Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, kind of explained in an interview with Gamasutra why he feels some folks were disappointed with the company’s showing.
“One of the things that, on one hand, I love and, on the other hand, that troubles me tremendously about not only our fanbase but about the gaming community at large is that, whenever you share information, the perspective is, ‘Thank you, but I want more.’ ‘Thank you, but give me more.’ I mean, it is insatiable,” he said.
He continued, “For years this community has been asking, ‘Where’s Pikmin?’ ‘Where’s Pikmin?’ ‘Where’s Pikmin?’ We give them Pikmin. And then they say, ‘What else?'”
Fils-Aime continued, in regards to the announcement of Nintendo Land and the confirmation of a new Mario game for the Wii U launch, “they say, ‘Ho-hum, give me more.’ So it’s an interesting challenge.”
He also noted that Wii Fit has sold over 43 million copies worldwide, pretty much confirming why a Wii U version was needed, and concluded, “I would argue that the gaming community actually is unable to differentiate between a phenomenon and something that is ‘ho-hum.’… until they play it. Until they experience it. Until their friends and their non-gaming associates say, ‘Hey, have you seen X?'”
Interesting comments. What do you think, are gamers a wee bit fickle?
