Those of you who bought a Nintendo Wii U last week probably had a heck of a time getting started, as you first had to download a 5 GB update for your system just to make sure everything was running up to speed.  But Nintendo feels your pain in that regard, particularly company president Satoru Iwata.

In an interview with IGN, Iwata stated, “Personally, I think that users should be able to use all the functions of a console video game machine as soon as they open the box.  So I feel very sorry for the fact that purchasers of Wii U have to experience a network update which takes such a long time, and that there are the services which were not available at the hardware’s launch.”  (He’s speaking about the lack of the Nintendo TVii service, which was hyped at a press conference a few months ago.)

It doesn’t entirely alleviate the system’s problems, but it’s nice to have a sympathetic ear.  As we stated above, we’re sure things will get better with the launch of new services over the next few weeks.
