Nidhogg Adds Rollback Netcode, Training Mode, and More in Surprise Update
What year is this?
Messhof’s incredible competitive fencing game from 2014 just got a massive update some 12 years after its release, adding several highly requested features that make online play substantially better. The Online Update brings a lot to this classic, and here’s a breakdown of everything that’s been added and why it’s a great time to jump back in.
Nidhogg Online and Training Mode Update
The new update for Nidhogg adds several features, including a major overhaul of its online multiplayer with the introduction of rollback netcode. If you’ve played any modern fighting game, you’ll know how important that is for responsive online play, especially when facing opponents from different regions.
The new matchmaking system prioritizes ping, but that’s not all. You can now join playable online lobbies, accept in-game invites without opening the Steam overlay, and view your friends list directly in the game. I’m surprised more modern games still don’t get this right. Matches also have to be accepted within a time limit, so you’re less likely to end up in a lobby with an AFK player.
Outside of the online improvements, the update finally adds a Training Mode with difficulty sliders and a selection of preset scenarios, including challenges that disable divekicks or throws. You can also select any map without having to go through Arcade Mode.

There’s also CPU BATTLE, which lets you watch two CPU-controlled fighters go at each other and enjoy the chaos. The update includes several other fixes and improvements, along with a new in-game news section. You can read the full announcement on Steam.
Nidhogg Is 65% Off on Steam
The update also comes with a huge 65% discount on Steam, available until October 20, 2026. Normally priced at $10, Nidhogg is down to just $3.50, and you really can’t go wrong with it, even if you only get a few hours of fun out of it.
If you haven’t played Nidhogg before, I implore you to play it with a friend and lose hours shouting at each other over the most ridiculous ways to get impaled by a fencing sword. It’s arguably one of the best multiplayer games ever made, and this update gives it even more longevity. I hope it also helps bring more players online and keeps the community active.
