We’ve seen a few Lord of the Rings games for this generation, including the light-hearted Lego Lord of the Rings and the more recent MOBA Guardians of Middle-Earth. That isn’t stopping Warner Bros. from taking its game to the next level, though.

The publisher has announced a new third-person action game titled Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, which will make its way to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Developed by Monolith – the same studio behind Guardians of Middle Earth – the game puts you in the shoes of a ranger seeking revenge against Sauron’s armies after his family is killed. He manages to avoid death with the help of “Wraith abilities,” which in turn will help him seek his revenge.

“Players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death. The game introduces new gameplay mechanics to the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customized gameplay that will be rewarding for players,” said WB’s Samantha Ryan.

The game will also introduce a Nemesis system. “Through the Nemesis System, enemy relationships and characteristics are shaped by player actions and decisions to create personal archenemies that remember and adapt to the player and are distinct to every gameplay session,” claims Warner’s press release. “Gamers are able to craft their own battles, enemies and rewards within the dynamic world that remembers and adapts to their choices, delivering a unique experience to every player,” added Ryan.

A release date hasn’t been provided, but the game is likely due to arrive in 2015.
