Mega Man First Person Shooter In Development At One Point

The team behind the Metroid Prime series was ready to take the Blue Bomber in a whole new direction…until cancellation, anyway.

It’s funny how some of these game projects that could have been something – only to be canned in the midst of their fruition – manage to surface years later and leave us wondering, “What if?”  In this case, it’s a first-person shooter…one based in the Mega Man universe.

Austin-based Armature Studio, which is made up of several leads that worked on Metroid Prime with Retro Studios, were called upon to work on a new first-person shooter for Capcom in the Mega Man series titled Maverick Hunter.  The game took on a much darker tone than previous games featuring the Blue Bomber, but focused tightly on the Mega Man X legacy first crafted in the SNES games.  Unfortunately it was canceled six months into development, never to surface again.

That is, until Polygon did a full blow-out on the game, which you can read here.  Not only does it detail everything the game was about, but it also features gameplay video.  Mega Man fans should see this to believe it.
