The Last of Us Part 2 Update Adds Two New Features Including Permadeath

A new The Last of Us Part 2 update is adding two major new features to the game.

The Last of Us Part 2 is getting its first major update since the game launched earlier this year and it’s set to go live on August 13th. With the new Grounded update comes two new features including a new difficulty and permadeath.

For those that thought The Last of Us Part 2 was too easy, a new difficulty setting will be added to the game called Grounded. For those that played the first Last of Us, this difficulty will feel very familiar because of how brutally unforgiving it can be throughout the gameplay experience.

The Grounded difficulty essentially strips the game of helpful tips while also making ammo and materials for crafting “incredibly scarce.” Certain HUD elements will also be removed as well to make the survival game much more difficulty and all on the player instead of providing tips and hints.

But it’s not just the new Grounded difficulty that’s making its way into The Last of Us Part 2, a new permadeath mode is also on the way. This mode tasks players with completing the entire game without dying once, though Naughty Dog did mention that players will be able to have checkpoints on a per chapter basis.

For those that are concerned that this is too much to get Platinum, don’t be worried: for those that opt out of the higher difficulty setting and permadeath, the Platinum trophy is still possible. This is also good news for those that have no real interest in playing through the game a second time.

As with all patches, the upcoming The Last of Us Part 2 update will also come bearing the usual tweaks and bug fixes that most updates have for games, including fixes for commonly found bugs, audio updates, and more. Players will also be given the option to disable the Listen Mode in-game while also tweaking with the game’s rendering and visual effects.

As for the game itself, the highly anticipated sequel is now available exclusively on PlayStation 4.
